We Are Keeping It Green.

April 20, 2018

As Earth Day approaches every year, Hatteras distributes a printed mailer promoting awareness about protecting Earth’s vital resources. But in today’s environmentally conscious world, we’d like to call attention to some interesting facts about paper consumption.

Interesting facts about paper!

  • Over the last six decades, the net total U.S. forest area has increased by over 3%. Each year, forests in the U.S. grow significantly more wood that is harvested. (USDA Forest Service)

  • The print and paper industry accounts for only 1.1% of global carbon dioxide emissions. (ECOFYS)

  • Paper has the highest recovery rate out of all recycled products. In 2016, the U.S. reached a record of 67.2% paper recovery rate. (American Forest & Paper Association)

Paper has been around for more than 2,000 years, and its natural sustainability features are to thank for that. Paper is highly versatile and its wide-ranging aesthetic qualities allows for endless opportunities for effective means of communication – even in a digital world!

Hatteras proudly supports sustainable forestry initiatives, and is committed to building an ecologically responsible and sustainable future.

Each year, we recycle over 2,000 tons of paper, plates, cardboard, glass and plastics. But our commitment doesn’t stop there:

  • We maintain an FSC® Certification by participating in annual audits to ensure compliance. This Forest Stewardship Council certification ensures the paper, on which we print, contains fibers from well-managed and responsibly harvested forests, that meet strict environmental and socioeconomic standards. In 2017, Hatteras purchased 5.5 million pounds of FSC certified paper.

  • Our use of soy-based ink is more environmentally friendly, when compared to traditional petroleum-based inks. We also manage ink consumption by inventory regulation and ink recycling.

  • We are 100% wind-powered. As of November 1, 2014, Hatteras increased its consumption of reusable energy to 100%.

Using greener printing practices and technologies each day makes it possible for us to provide the best environmental and economical solutions for our customers.
